The Energy Development Corporation (EDC), a USAID partner in protecting forests and conserving biodiversity, celebrated its 3rd BINHI Day on June 29 in Pasig City. BINHI is the company's nationwide reforestation and biodiversity restoration project, which aims to help restore Philippine forests and save 96 of its most threatened native tree species. From 2009 to 2017, EDC had planted about 6.3 million indigenous tree seedlings, some of which are endangered. In 2016, EDC partnered with USAID Biodiversity and Watersheds Improved for Stronger Economy and Ecosystem Resilience (B+WISER) to strengthen forest protection in its geothermal reservations. EDC adopted the Lawin Forest and Biodiversity Protection System, making it the first private company to implement Lawin in the Philippines. USAID and the DENR provided technical assistance in setting up the Lawin system and trained EDC patrollers and forest rangers, data managers, and resource managers.

A scientist and environment advocate, Miss Earth 2017 Karen S. Ibasco joined the event as the guest of honor to promote care for the environment, particularly forests and seas. (Photo credit: USAID/B+WISER)
