Bike Hike Plant 2017: Celebrating 154 Years of Philippine Forestry Service

         A moving forest, where each participant will bike carrying a seedling inside their backpack, to be planted at the foothills of Mt. Arayat. More than 1,000 bikers and hikers joined the Bike Hike Plant 2017 in celebration of the 154th Anniversary of the Philippine Forestry Service.          
        More than 600 Bikers trekked the 30 kilometers route from DENR Region 3 Office in San Fernando City, Pampanga to Mt. Arayat National Park. Seedlings of indigenous and agroforestry tree species were given at the seedling distribution area near the park entrance. A few minutes hike took them to the planting site. DENR Region 3 Dir. Francisco E. Milla Jr., DENR Field Operations Dir. Ricardo L. Calderon, DENR Legal Service for Luzon Dir. Wilfredo Saraos and Manila Water Operations Services Dir. Estelita V. Orodio also joined as bikers.

          The rest of the participants from the DENR Central Office, Bureaus, and Field Offices, national government agencies and local government units in Region 3, development partners and corporate sponsors also participated in the hiking and planting event.

          FMB Dir. Nonito M. Tamayo, Dir. Milla and Dir. Calderon welcomed the participants during the opening program. Route briefings and safety instructions were given before the 5:30 am ride out. Messages were given by Mayor Emmanuel M. Alejandrino and Vice Mayor Ramon M. Changcoco of Arayat during the closing ceremonies. Three lucky participants won brand new mountain bikes courtesy of Joyride Bike Shop and Dir. Milla. Shirts were also raffled during the closing program.

         The event aims to celebrate and showcase the beauty of Philippine forests, encourage the participation of various stakeholders in taking care of our forests, and widen the network of forestry champions to include bikers and hikers in rehabilitating and protecting our forests through promotion of responsible tourism and proactive reforestation.

      The event was organized by the Forest Management Bureau in collaboration with the DENR Region 3, Pampanga Police Provincial Office, Local Government Units of Municipality of Arayat, Municipality of Mexico and City of San Fernando, Kapampangan Mt Bikers Network (KMTB), and Joyride Bike Shop.
