In celebration of the 2016 International Day for Biodiversity (IDBD), a photo contest with the theme “REDD-plus: Safeguarding biodiversity and forests for the people” was conducted by the National REDD+ System Philippines Project, funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) under the International Climate Initiative (IKI), implemented by GIZ in cooperation with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). The winners were announced during the IDBD 2016 celebration on May 20, 2016 at the DENR Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB) Training Center, Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife, Quezon City.

The activity under the IDBD 2016 theme “Mainstreaming Biodiversity; Sustaining People and their Livelihoods” aimed to raise awareness on REDD-plus and its role in the protection of forests, conservation of biodiversity, and providing livelihoods for the people, and the importance of forests was highlighted during the event.

The photo contest was opened to all Filipino photo enthusiasts aged 18 years old and above living in the three REDD+ project sites, namely the Provinces of Albay, Eastern Samar, and Davao Oriental.

A final screening was conducted by a jury composed of representatives of FMB, BMB, a CSO member from the Non-Timber Forest Products-Exchange Programme Philippines, GIZ, and the renowned photojournalist Ms. Jacqueline Hernandez.
