The Forest Management Bureau is currently conducting the 2nd cluster of the workshop entitled “Forest Carbon 101: The Role of the Forestry Sector in the Paris Agreement”. The workshop aims to equip participants with the basic understanding of the role of the forestry sector in the goals of the Paris Agreement, thereby enhancing the effective implementation of relevant DENR plans, policies and programs.

In his welcome message, Atty. Ronnel B. Astor, Assistant Regional Director for Management Services of DENR Region V, highlighted the importance of conducting capacity building activities in relation to the Paris Agreement especially now that the country has been experiencing global warming impacts due to greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2015, the Philippines joined other 195 countries in signing the Paris Agreement, an accord under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The agreement aims to hold “the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels” and pursue efforts “to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels”. It was then integrated and implemented into the country’s national policies, plans and programs.

In view of the policies and programs related to the Paris Agreement and carbon management that are being developed and implemented, there is a need for the DENR and other stakeholders to be capacitated on the basic concepts and principles of carbon management in the forestry sector.

The participants of the Cluster II Orientation are representatives from DENR Regions 4B, 5, 6, 7, and 8. The workshop will be held from September 23 to 27, 2024 at the Proxy by the Oriental Albay Hotel, Legazpi City.
