The Forest Management Bureau is currently conducting the “Forest Carbon Forum: The Role of the Forestry Sector in the Paris Agreement”. The workshop aims to equip participants with the basic understanding of the role of the forestry sector in the goals of the Paris Agreement, thereby enhancing the effective implementation of relevant DENR plans, policies and programs.
In his opening remarks, Assistant Secretary Arleigh J. Adorable highlighted the importance of conducting this orientation which will enable the country to accelerate our efforts in adapting and mitigating against the impacts of global warming and climate change for the present and future generations.
To recall, the Philippines joined other 195 countries in signing the Paris Agreement, an accord under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 2015. The agreement aims to hold “the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels” and pursue efforts “to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels”. It was then integrated and implemented into the country’s national policies, plans and programs.
In view of the policies and programs related to the Paris Agreement and carbon management that are being developed and implemented, there is a need for the DENR and other stakeholders to be capacitated on the basic concepts and principles of carbon management in the forestry sector.
The participants are representatives from the different DENR Offices, representatives from the development sector such as Forestry Development Center (FDC), Forest Foundation Philippines (FFP), Catholic Relief Services, USAID-SIBOL, private sector such as EcoSecurities and Shell Philippines, other National Government Agencies such as the National Commission on Indigenous People (NCIP), Climate Change Commission (CCC), and National Economic Development Authority (NEDA), among others.
