The Forest Management Bureau (FMB), through its Forest Protection Section of the Forest Resources Conservation Division, is holding the CY 2025 LAWIN Forest and Biodiversity Protection System Midyear Assessment and Data Management Conference from July 28 to August 1, 2025, at the Monaco Hotel in Taytay, Rizal.
This week-long event brings together Regional Data Managers, their designated alternates, and selected FMB technical staff. Its primary purpose is to conduct a comprehensive review of the ongoing implementation of the Lawin System, a vital tool for forest and biodiversity conservation throughout the Philippines.
A key component of the conference involves the evaluation of submitted Regional Five-Year Forest Conservation Area (FCA) Plans for CY 2025–2029. These plans are critical for ensuring regional conservation efforts align with national forest protection strategies.
Participants are also assessing the implementation of the upgraded LAWIN System, which now utilizes SMART (Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool) version 7.5.6 and SMART Mobile for real-time field data collection and reporting. Discussions are focused on identifying operational gaps, data management challenges, and practical solutions to enhance the system’s efficiency and reliability.
The event serves as a platform for knowledge sharing, where best practices and collaborative strategies from different regions are presented. These contributions are expected to inform policy recommendations and improve the overall use of Lawin as a science-based, data-driven tool for monitoring forest conditions and enforcing environmental laws.
The Midyear Assessment underscores DENR’s commitment to strengthening forest governance through digital innovation, inter-regional collaboration, and evidence-based planning. By continuously improving the Lawin System, the Bureau aims to bolster the country’s efforts in preserving its natural forests and protecting biodiversity amid growing environmental pressures.
