This annual event, mandated by Proclamation No. 470, s. 2003 has been a consistent global effort to address one of our time's most pressing environmental issues - marine pollution. With the theme, "Clean Seas for Healthy Fisheries", simultaneous cleanup drives took place in nine (9) identified locations namely, SM By the Bay, Pasay City; Las Piñas – Parañaque Wetland Park (LPPWP); Baseco Beach, Manila City; Tanza Marine Tree Park (TMTP), Navotas City; Manila Baywalk Dolomite Beach; Shores of Brgys. Tangos North and South, Navotas City; Tullahan River, Brgy. San Bartolome, Novaliches in Quezon City; Pasig River (Lawton Ferry Station, Manila); and H20 Hotel in Manila Ocean Park, Roxas Boulevard, Manila City.
The cleanup near Roxas Boulevard and H2O Hotel resulted in the collection of a substantial amount of properly segregated trash, including single-use plastics, food packaging, water bottles, and various debris. While the immediate impact of these cleanup activities is evident in the form of improved cleanliness of coastlines, the significance of these activities lies in the awareness and consciousness it foster among participants and the community at large.
As we look forward to future International Coastal Cleanup events, let us remember that the responsibility to protect our oceans and coasts rests with each of us daily.
